The journey to Elura Wines

• EST. 1996 •

An expression of the land and environment of Gundowring

The journey to Elura wines started in 1996 with the first plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon vines by three generations of the Adams family on their farm in Gundowring – Ian and Trudi Adams, who have farmed the land since the mid-1970s, Mark and Brendan Adams, their sons and the team behind Elura, as well as Trudi’s mother Erna, who delighted in getting her hands into the soil and helping establish a legacy for her descendants.

Over the next few years the vineyard expanded to include Shiraz and Viognier vines and produced a number of memorable vintages. However the timing of this new venture wasn’t exactly ideal, with Ian and Trudi entering their retirement years, Mark pursuing adventures in Europe and Brendan at university in Melbourne and then France… So, the vineyard took a bit of a hiatus.

After several years of cooking, winemaking and living the culture in France and Austria Mark returned to Gundowring first, bringing with him fresh ideas, knowledge and a philosophy for the type of viticulture best suited to our site. With careful consideration of our particular environment Mark began the gradual process of vineyard regeneration based on principles of sustainability, an understanding of the health of our soils, and a canopy management approach to promote balanced growth– a process that is continues to today.

Brendan has also returned to the area from Europe, taking an academic position in nearby Albury-Wodonga. Brendan now assists in the vineyard and the winery, as well as managing the sales and marketing of the wines. Together the brothers have created Elura Wines as an expression of the land and environment of Gundowring, and honouring cultural traditions tied to a deep relationship with the land. Mark and Brendan are very proud to launch Elura Wines in 2018.
